Abdominal Weight Loss... Losing Fat From Your Middle

As an exercise guru once stated, "Everyone's got Ab's you jus' need to show em". From the frantic efforts in gyms and obsessions with the so elusive six pack, it seems many never quite got what he meant.

The most noticeable part of a fat person is quite often the stomach but its disadvantage is much more than cosmetic. And apart from being concerned about the loss of aesthetics, it is also reasonable to get concerned of a fat midsection

A fat abdomen not only results to larger pant sizes, it is also a serious health issue. It points to your state of degenerating health. Accumulation of body fat mainly around your midsection (commonly referred to as apple shaped, as opposed to pear shaped that has fat around hips, buttocks and thighs) is more dangerous than any other fat distribution. It is associated with increased risk of heart disease, Type II diabetes and other diseases that often accompany obesity.

However the notion that you can lose fat specifically from the stomach area only is unfounded. Spot weight reduction is really a myth. You just cannot loss weight from one specific area of the body. A good example of how one loses body fat is given by the fat-loss expert and body builders, Tom Venuto.

He explains losing fat is like empting a swimming pool. The last part of the pool to get covered by water when filling it up will be the first part of the pool to show up when emptying it. On the contrary the first part of the pool, the deep end, which fills up first, will be the last place to empty.

Another example would be the loading of a truck container with sacks of potatoes. The first sacks to go into the container will be at the furthest end. The last sacks would be closest to the door. On unloading the first sacks to be loaded will be the first to be unloaded while the first to be loaded will be the last to be unloaded.

Similarly in losing weight the last place you deposited fat will be the first place you lose in. And the first place you deposited fat will be the last place to lose it.

Unfortunately, for most of us, the first place we deposit fat is in the abdominal area. This is particularly so for men. Women tend to have first deposits in thighs and hip area also. This distribution of body fat then translates to mean that abdominal fat is usually the last body fat to be lost.

Though this is roughly the way the body distributes fat, obviously it is not as simple. Your body does not store fat at the abdomen and say, Ahha! That's full, lets' start depositing in the under arms. But on the other hand, it doesn't necessarily distribute body fat equally around the body. Depending on your genetics the body will deposit fat in different parts and at different rates. Often some part will have more deposits than others. However you will rarely see a fat person who does not have a large abdomen.

To see your abdominal muscles you will need to cut down on your total body fat. More crunches will just not do it. Yes the crunches do develop the muscles, unfortunately they will still be under two inches of sub-cuteneous fat. And most likely a one pack was not exactly your idea of attractive.

Healthy Weight Loss Burns More Fat

Discouragement and frustration with failed diets have defeated folks across age groups. People are afraid to go on diets because when they go off they always gain back the weight and sometimes even more. Research has found an important clue in the search for why many diets are not successful.

When someone starts a diet that reduces calories, his or her body thinks it is going into a time of famine. The body is built for survival so it turns on the famine response, which is to conserve calories. The body conserves calories by storing fat to use in the future, and begins to use protein and body muscle to burn for daily energy. This actually causes a loss of muscle in the body.

Since most people do not stick to the current diet they are on, they go back to their normal level of calories consumed. The problem is that they have lost muscle, and the ability to burn calories more efficiently, and so they start to gain fat again. The body now has even more fat than before since that muscle was lost.

People who have gone on repeated diets are in a cycle of losing muscle and gaining and re-gaining fat. Here is why they struggle. A pound of fat burns only 2 calories per day.
So if you are 20 lbs (of fat) overweight, and you multiply 2 by 20, you are only burning 40 calories per day. If that extra weight were muscle, it would burn 50 calories per pound and result in 1000 calories.

A person damages their metabolism with this kind of yo-yo dieting, making it almost impossible to lose weight. The reason why weight loss and weight management programs with amino acids called leucine are different is because leucine helps the body build and repair muscle tissue. The body keeps the important muscle (that burns fat) as inches and pounds are shed.

Those who use a leucine powered program can actually retain 100% of muscle mass, a healthier option. This means the weight that can be lost is all fat. Muscle retention improves the body's ability to burn fat, and improves metabolic rate. Inches and pounds can be lost instead of muscle.

Q: Ive followed most of your nutrition advice as well as purchased a few nutritional information products. Ive managed to drop a good amount of weight but I have hit a wall. I decided that my carbohydrates were too low so a few weeks ago I began cycling them. I was able to drop a few more pounds but nothing great. Do you have any tips for fat loss? - Nancy

A: Your problem can be answered in two simple steps. While I do suspect that you have over dieted, meaning that you dieted for too long that you need to increase your calories. This is a common issue with females but I am going to assume that is not your problem since you seem to have a good idea of correct eating. Here are two suggestions

1) Add in more light active recovery work in. The problem with many dieters is that they simply focus on their weight training and aerobic work, nothing more. While it is true that most people over exercise, not enough people are performing light circuits on their off day or after exercise to further increase their energy usage. It is as simply as going for a walk with a weighted vest on, performing light sled pulling (I typically perform this 1 to 2 times a week at local parks) or adding in light medicine ball circuits. The med ball doesnt have to heavy, 10 or 12 pounds. An effective circuit would look like this.

-Rotation throws

-One arm wall bounces

-Front loaded squats

-Throws for distance

-Side throw downs

Ive had my clients perform this circuit for 2-4 sets of 20 reps and have seen improved results in both fat loss and recovery. Best of all it takes about 5 minutes

2) Correct diet planning. This is another big failure for most people, even those who know that they have to eat every two hours. People just dont plan correctly. If you want to give yourself a chance at success you've got to pre-cook and pre-plan. You say that you have a good of nutritional information so I will take your word on it.

Q: Help! I went bathing suit shopping this weekend and need to tighten some areas up before I step into the sand. This isn't a one piece either, help I need to lose fat!-Lee

A: I'm going to assume that you have trained hard and are already pretty lean. Here's some suggestions to lose fat

-Focus on your upper back, abs, arms and glutes/hamstring since they are the most noticeable areas in your bathing suit.

-Prioritize deadlifts, under hand rows, single leg deadlifts, steps-ups and bridges to bring up your back and glutes/hamstring.

-Prioritize heavy reverse and hammer curls for your arms and weighted, heavy ab work to make those areas "pop".

These should make you lose fat fast.

1. Consider using Extra Virgin Coconut Oil

This is definitely not your typical weight loss product. It isn't even categoried as a weight loss product. BUT IT IS. In fact, if I was forced to choose any weight loss "supplement" to take for 2 weeks in order to lose a lot of weight fast, I'd be taking this stuff.

Weight loss can be difficult for a lot of people. Even the smallest dieting mistake can alter our weight. While for some people weight loss comes naturally, others struggle for weeks to lose a measly 5 pounds. So what is the secret to quick and effective weight loss? Are there any helpful tips which can successfully speed up and improve loss of body weight? These are both interesting questions and here are a couple suggestions that I stumbled upon.

The first step towards quick weight loss is proper hydration. If you are trying to lose weight it is very important to drink plenty of water. Water is involved in absolutely every physiological process that your body undergoes. This means that water is a part of waste removal and digestion (both very important aspects of weight loss). People who have successfully lost weight in the past recommended drinking a tall glass of water right before every meal. Clearly, the diet you are currently on is incomplete until you incorporate an adequate amount of water.

Another step towards weight loss is eating smaller meals more frequently throughout the day. When you eat smaller meals your metabolism works more efficiently and fewer calories get stored. When your meals are big, your metabolism becomes overworked and sluggish which leads to more calories stored. So instead of three giant meals, you should opt for four or five small meals. And last but certainly not least, remember to exercise. Try to incorporate cardio fitness at least four times per week for a half an hour. These are just a few weight loss tips for anyone who has ever struggled with those few stubborn pounds.

3 Fast and Easy Weight Loss Rules

You want to lose weight and you want to lose it NOW. But when your current habits and current state of health reflect otherwise, you may not know where to begin.

At this point Tio looks like he wishes he had just asked me about the weather, the upcoming election or even quantum physics, ANYTHING but be told that he needs to lose weight.

"Isabel, I'm 60 years old and I have been this fat forever. I wouldn't even know where to start."

So I gave him 3 fast and easy weight loss rules to follow.

"Tio, follow these three rules and I guarantee you, better yet, I promise you, you will lose a minimum of 10 lbs. in 14 days."

1. Don't eat anything that is white. Name every single food that is white and chances are you shouldn't be eating it. Ok, I know, cauliflower is white but based on Tio's current eating habits, I didn't think he was going to be shedding any tears over cauliflower. What I'm really talking about is white flour, white sugar, and milk. White foods like chicken and turkey breast and fish are ok to eat.

2. Only drink water, NOTHING else! How about coffee? Just to keep any possible withdrawal headaches at bay, one small cup of organic black coffee. Can you add half and half?...Well is it white?

3. Don't eat anything with the word wheat in the ingredients list. What if it's whole wheat? Look, if the word starts with W and ends in T and has the letters h e a in between, you can't eat it.

Does Carb Cycling Work?

Carb cycling has become quite a buzzword in the weight loss industry. Also known as Carb Rotating, this has become a method which many people are using to get their weight loss process going in a fast and continuous manner.

But what is carb cycling and does it really work?

Are you overweight?Do you struggle with trying to lose weight?Well, you are not alone.Americans are getting fatter, and over 2/3 of US adults are now either overweight or even obese.About 1/3 of children fall into this category as well.Many of us think it's all our fault, if only we had the willpower to eat less and eat better foods and exercise more, we would be able to lose weight.Well, although we will be healthier and more likely to end up at a normal weight if we do these things, did you know that it is far more difficult to do when you consume MSG and other chemicals in your diet?

MSG Causes Weight Gain

Last couple of years so called 3MD diet is gaining on popularity. This diet is also known as 90 day separation diet. It is based on two 90 days dieting periods. Main advantages of this diet should be; clear and easy to follow rules and proven results (weight loss in range of 40 55 pounds). Among other results that 3MD diet promises are decreased sensibility on weather and positive changes in metabolism.

Even though many people find it easy to believe those statements, there are really no in-depth explanation in medical of physical terms, how should this diet in fact work. Further more after this 3MD diet is ended, weight gains are returning. Changing from 3MD diet to our previous nutrition patterns makes people gain weight again. 3MD dieting success is built upon following presumptions:

- We are all subject to a daily nutrition cycles (does not explain what that is).

- We need the right combination of foods - following exact rules defined for each day (protein day, carbohydrate day, starch day, fruit day) and every 29th day there is so called water day or fasting day.

Following those two presumptions one should lose weight regardless how many calories one takes in daily. Menus prescribed by inventors of 3MD diet are quite strict 2 oranges, 3 pieces of cake, smaller chicken, dinner is of lunch,but not mentioning what kind of cake, how big a piece should be, which parts of chicken, how carb rich lunch, nothing about caloric value of foods one should eat.

Many additional rules accompany this diet. There are in fact some healthy advices among them: how one should use olive oil, restriction in salt, advice to consult a doctor. Exercise, which is the corner stone of each serious diet on the world, deserved just an obscure mentioning, not even close to what one should do to lose weight for real. This sad fact makes 3MD diet even more popular with overweight people. Those people become caught in a deadlock of repetitive weight gains after completing this diet. Furthermore this diet offers no explanation what so ever about principles of its effectiveness.

Why is separating foods according to specific days and separating nutrients so important?
How exactly will this make us lose fat?

Daily separation cycle according to 3MD consists of a strict diet from 8pm to midday next day. Within this period only eating fruits and drinking water is allowed. This does not make any sense. Those 16 hours represent 2/3 of the whole day. And one should not starve its body for 16 hours each day. Each body that undergoes such a daily fasting period becomes more sensitive on energy accumulation from each bite we take. Messages our body reports to our brains are to lower energy consumption and leverage the lack of energy with draining energy stored in muscles. We force our body to start dissolving our muscle mass. That is no good news.
Muscles, when in motion, are bodys major energy (fat) burner. So we are actually weakening the only tool that can help us get rid of fat.

3MD does not give any explanation on why should we eat carbohydrates on one day and proteins on the other. The problem is that fruit day and starch day are also carbohydrate days. Sugar in fruits and complex sugar in starch are just two different sorts of the same thing carbohydrates. Even if we somehow can understand fruit day (healthy sugar), it is hard to make sense in separation of starch day and carbohydrate day (complex, refined sugars). And there is a rule where one can take whole-wheat bread together with chicken, which contradicts every sane weight loss program (one should not mix proteins (chicken) with carbohydrates (bread)).
3MD diet does work on a short run. But the weight loss is consequence of water that our body loses with this diet. 3MD is extremely popular as it does not prohibit eating calorie bombs like chocolate. The other short term positive effect of this diet is that it does somehow regulate daily eating habits. People are disciplined by force. That makes it much easier to fall back into old eating patterns as soon as 90 days are over.
