Counting Calories to Lose Weight

It seems people have been counting calories to lose weight for ages and you all witness every day conversations about how many calories this food has, compared to the other and how much exercise will you need to burn that super sized meal. Although counting calories is almost a century old and a calorie book can be found almost anywhere, results are not gratifying. So should you begin or keep on counting calories? Let's look some more into this.

Counting calories to lose weight has proved to work. There is a great amount of research behind it and scientists agree to its theory. But to put into practice and start losing weight it is another story. It only works under certain circumstances:

  1. You have to know the exact size of the food portion to decide how many calories are there. According to recent studies among dietitians, even these professionals tend to underestimate the amount of calories contained in foods especially restaurant portions. And when most of us tend to think that a restaurant serving is a "normal" one, we are surely not counting the right number of calories. A restaurant portion is most times almost double the size of the normal one, the one that an average person needs.

  2. Many people think that whether you eat chocolate cakes all day long or french fries it doesn't matter, as long as you are consuming the right amount of calories for your height, weight and level of activity. So if you have found out that 2000 calories will be enough you can begin counting calories to lose weight no matter what kinds of food you eat. Right? Wrong! It is of great concern the quality of foods you eat. Your calorie intake should be balanced and of good quality otherwise counting calories to lose weight will be fruitless.

Now you can see that counting calories is not as easy as it sounds because there are many factors to take into consideration and unless you are under a dietitian's supervision or you are a dietitian yourself, it won't work effortlessly.

Instead of counting calories to lose weight, first you should make part of your every day life some helpful guidelines. 4-5 meals spread throughout the day, adequate amount of fiber in form of fruit and vegetables and regular exercise. And lots of water! Did you know that almost 30% of the calories the average American consumes come from sweets, desserts, soft drinks and alcoholic beverages? These are not good quality foods and are not to be so high in one's diet.

From all of the above one can say that counting calories to lose weight will not have any result for the average person, unless some eating and life habits are not left behind.
