Why Fast Weight Loss Isn't Just About Reducing Calories

Most popular diets, especially the ones that claim to work for fast weight loss, depend on reduced calories to cause the fat to burn off. Many researchers have found that the fat almost never stays off when these 'well-balanced' low-calorie diets are used.

However, there is an 'unbalanced' diet that has been shown to work for fast and permanent weight loss, without making people hungry.

Ever since 1825, when Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin wrote a famous book about food called The Physiology of Taste, the most successful therapeutic diets for obesity have been based on the idea that excess body fat was caused by eating too many starchy and floury foods.

Our great-grandmothers would have agreed, because this was considered common sense until about 40 years ago. Diets that work for permanent weight loss restrict the refined carbohydrates, like sugar and flour, without restricting the number of calories consumed as protein or fat.

In 1882 a doctor named William Harvey, who had recently attended a lecture by a famous Paris expert in diabetes, became famous himself by curing a patient of his obesity. His patient, William Banting, wrote a wildly popular pamphlet describing his successful weight loss using the prescribed diet of meat, fish, and game, with a bit of toast and fruit.

Dr. Harvey knew that grain fed to animals makes them fat, that diabetic patients are often overweight, and that a diet based on meat and dairy products would stop the secretion of sugar in the urine of diabetic patients and caused their excess weight to melt away.

Dr. Harvey theorized that excess weight and diabetes may be different manifestations of the same syndrome, and he put his new patient on a diet made up of meat, dairy products and low-starch vegetables. As it turns out, this theory turned out to be correct.

The syndrome has been variously called Syndrome X, insulin resistance syndrome, and most recently metabolic syndrome. Peter Cleave was one of the first to publish studies and theories that connected the 'modern' illnesses of diabetes, coronary heart disease, obesity, gout and hypertension to one disorder caused by the metabolism of refined carbohydrates.

Fattening Experiment Proves Where Body Fat Comes From

In the 1960s Ethan Sims, a researcher, began a series of 'fattening' experiments. Volunteers were asked to eat an excess number of calories, up to 1000 calories over the amount they would normally eat, in order to find out which foods made them fat.

Volunteers who were given only protein foods, or only fatty foods, lost their appetites and were unable to eat enough to increase the calories as much as the researchers wanted, and they were unable to gain weight.

When volunteers were put on diets that included both carbohydrates and fats, they sometimes ate more than 6000 extra calories in a day and still felt hungry. These volunteers had no trouble at all gaining weight. This research showed that there is something about the carbohydrates themselves that allows people to overeat and still remain hungry.

Over the years a number of obesity specialists have prescribed a low-carb diet to their patients, and these diets have met with considerable success, often without reducing the calories. One of the first doctors to write about his success with a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet was Blake Donaldson, author of Strong Medicine,, in which he gave a number of case studies of people losing as much as three pounds a week. Two other doctors who wrote about using similar diets with their patients were Dr. John Yudkin, author of The Slimming Business, and Dr. Atkin's Diet Revolution, written in 1973.

In a recent book by Gary Taubes, Good Calories, Bad Calories, the history of obesity, diabetes and heart disease research and treatment is thoroughly explained. After spending over 5 years reading the historical and current literature about the treatment of illnesses associated with the metabolic syndrome, Mr. Taubes concluded that the documentation points to a therapeutic diet based on animal foods and fresh vegetables. This is very similar to the original 'fast weight loss diet' that helped William Banting lose weight back in 1882.

1. Actually rub your stomach

Good vs. Evil. We see it everyday in the world around us, yet we don't think of weight loss in those terms.

What did the devil use in his first temptation -- food! Since it worked so well the first time, don't you think he'd continue to use food as a temptation?

There are many good diet programs out there that will help you lose weight. Where they fall short is they talk about temptation as if it is something that just happens to you. They don't address who is tempting you (the devil) and how to combat the devil's temptations to continue to lose weight and keep it off.

From my experience, weight loss is a game. You think of food and the game begins. The devil tempts, and you react. If you give in the devil laughs and you gain weight.

I believe the devil wants you to lose weight. He knows that if you lose some weight and gain it back, you'll be more depressed than if you had not lost any weight at all.

So, how do you fight the devil? The following five keys are critical to your success.

1) Present moment awareness
Many studies have shown that successful people spend most of their time focused on the present, not daydreaming about the past or future. It is when you are daydreaming about the past or future that you often reach for "comfort foods" which is a nice way of saying the devil is tempting you. Being aware of what is happening is critical to weight loss success.

2) Visual (Awareness) cues
In the Bible God instructed the people of Israel to use awareness cues to remember to keep his commandments. God had them add tassels to their garments so when they looked at them they'd remember his commandments and observe them. I figure they must be a pretty good idea if God came up with them. Use anything that will help you stay focused ( pictures, crosses, figurines, music, etc.) around the house, at work, in your car etc. to keep you on track.

3) You have a voice, use it for good!
The Bible talks of the power of the word. You must be careful and watch what you say when trying to lose weight. What you say can affect you in a positive or negative way. Positive affirmations and prayers have been proven work, use them throughout the day.

4) Visualization
You already do it all the time without even realizing it. Your mind thinks in pictures, not words. If I say "red barn", what comes to mind? A picture of a red barn, not the words red barn. Super successful people in all walks of life understand the importance of visualization and make sure it is only used in ways that will benefit them. What a wonderful gift from God but few realize how important it is.

5) Read your Bible with anticipation
Read the Bible as if it were your favorite mystery novel, a book that you can't put down. Before you start, ask God for guidance, telling him you can't wait to see what he is going to reveal to you as you read. You'll be amazed at the insights he gives you.

While our discussion here is weight loss, these same keys can be used to deal with temptation in other areas of your life as well.

If all we have to do is exercise to live a fuller and healthier life then why isnt everybody doing it? Not enough time? Too expensive? Unmotivated? Well the fact is everybody wants to be healthier but it is time consuming and expensive. Or is it? The problem is that an individuals health is not given a high priority until its gone.

Not enough time?

Whether the person realizes it or not, they are just procrastinating. They seem to think that they will have more time in the future. To add to this the longer they wait the lower their health will become. Time must be allocated in your schedule or it will never be done because something will always come up. However it is easy to see why people get confused when trying to improve their lifestyle with so many diets and eating plans that seem to contradict each other. Then theres the abdominal machines, home gyms, and crosstrainers sold through the media that promise great results but always end up as expensive dust collectors.

The trick is to keep it simple.

  • When it comes to your food intake consume low fat meals: it makes sense that the less fat that goes into your mouth, the less fat that will stay on the body.
  • Eat meals with plenty of variety: the more variety, the greater intake of all the required nutrients. And keep portion size relative to what you require: eating low fat foods will still make you put on weight if you are eating enough for two people.
  • Eat foods high in fibre: these foods are more filling.
  • When it comes to exercise, just move more! You must burn more calories than you put into your mouth. Walk to the shops, take the stairs, or hide the remote control for the TV. It all adds up.
  • If you cant exercise on a given day, then be even more vigilant with your food intake.
  • Exercise doesnt have to be hard, just regular. It just takes thirty minutes each day to ward off our biggest killer: heart disease.
So, the simple solution to a healthier body? USE IT OR LOSE IT!

Weight Loss - What You Should Know Before Starting

You finally decide to lose those excess pounds of body fat. You open your favorite search engine and start looking for the "best weight loss program" or some "magic" pill that will make things much easier for you. You find tons of ads that offer you fast and effortless weight loss in few weeks or even days, and you think, "Wow, thats exactly what I am looking for."

Unfortunately, the chances of finding something that really works are minimal. Why? Because 99% of the weight loss systems or drugs you will find are either potentially dangerous for your health or pure marketing hype. Everybody likes to hear that losing weight is fast and easy, and nobody wants to hear it is a gradual process that requires some effort and discipline. So the self-claimed weight loss "experts" are giving to you exactly what you are looking for - a fast and easy solution for your problem. Unfortunately the easy way is not the way that will lead you to healthy and long-term results. If you want to learn how to detect the hype and the gimmicks you have to understand the basics of weight loss first. So lets start!

Weight loss vs. fat loss

First of all, lets consider the differences between both things: There are many ways to lose weight -losing water weight, losing muscle and bone weight, and losing body fat. In fact, it is very easy to lose "weight." Just start exercising and reduce your water intake and you will lose several pounds in the first few days. When exercising, your body loses a lot of water and because you have stopped drinking liquids, you easily become dehydrated and you will weigh several pounds less. But is this is a long-term and healthy weight loss? Of course not. You will gain back the weight as soon as you restore your normal water intake.

Here is another example: When you go on a diet and cut your calorie intake too much, your body detects the severe calorie deficit and slows down your metabolism. As a result, you stop losing fat (your reserve fuel), and start getting the energy you need from the muscle tissue. The result is decreased body weight, but unfortunately you have lost muscle instead of losing body fat.

As you see, to achieve long-term, natural weight loss you need to burn as much fat as possible with the minimum lean body mass loss.

How exactly fat is burned?

If you are a healthy person, to successfully lose fat you only need to burn more calories than you eat (or drink) while maintaining your metabolism fast. Isnt it simple? In order to achieve this, your calories must come from the proper food sources, such as lean protein (chicken breast, egg whites, seafood, extra-lean red meat), complex carbs (oatmeal, brown rice, whole grains, vegetables, etc.) and "good" fats (olive oil, flaxseeds, fatty fish and cod liver oil). You should also add some kind of cardio exercise to your program, such as walking, jogging or cycling. Keep in mind that cardio is considered the best way to directly burn the fat.

Lets look at an example:

If you burn 2500 kCal and eat about 2000 kCal every day, that is a deficit of 500 kCal. There are 3500 kCal in 1 pound of fat. This means you will be burning 1 pound per week of pure body fat. Surprised? Yes, only 1 pound per week. I know "10 pounds in two days!" sounds much better, but that is far from realistic goal.

Keep in mind that if you cut your calorie intake too much, you will slow down your metabolism, and this is not desirable if your goal is fat loss. This means that "Eat 500 kCal Burn 2500 kCal Lose 4 pounds per week" wont work for you.

Its definitely possible to burn fat at faster rates (with proper nutrition and exercise program), even without supplements, but keep in mind that the maximum rate that is considered healthy is 2 pounds per week (if you are extremely overweight, up to 3 pounds per week is fine). Achieving healthy long-term weight loss faster is practically impossible. If you find products or nutrition plans that promise fast weight loss, they probably base their claims on dehydration. You can lose water weight really fast but this is not a real fat loss and can lead to serious health conditions.

Conclusion

You dont need a pill to lose weight. You dont need to starve yourself, to restrict the intake of any macronutrient, or to buy any "miracle" product. You just need to consume fewer calories than you burn, and those should come from good natural food sources. The best way to increase the amount of calories you burn and to create such calorie deficit is to exercise. Mild calorie restriction plus 30 to 40 minutes of intensive cardio exercise every day is the "magic formula" you are looking for and that will make you lose fat like never before.
