Obesity -- the condition of being significantly above one's healthy weight -- is a health crisis in Alabama. Across our state, the number of overweight and obese individuals is rapidly increasing. The difficulty comes in restricting caloric intake - the primal urge to eat when hungry is almost irresistible.

Many people who suffer from obesity also have disordered relationships with food, consuming food to quell uncomfortable emotions rather than for nutrition or the pleasure of eating. In fact, many among the obese in our state are food addicts, plagued by a constant desire to eat even when they are not hungry.

Obesity is not a character flaw. It is a medical condition requiring medical treatment. Sadly, the pain and emotional trauma of obesity often leads those with the disease to attempt self-treatment. Many obese persons try to lose their excess weight by means of gimmicks, fad diets, exercise programs, or so-called weight-loss pills. These efforts lead some to lose significant weight, but most quickly regain it after they discontinue their weight loss program. Many people suffer damage to their health as a result of such quickie "cures".

No miracle cure for obesity exists. The only way to successfully treat the disease of obesity is through medical care, based upon a complete change in the patient's lifestyle and eating habits. To beat obesity we must change the way Alabamans think about and relate to food, enabling us to eat better food and less of it.

For most of us, education, counseling, support, and willpower are enough to accomplish this. For the rest, another option exists: weight loss surgery.

Weight Loss Secrets and Orovo Detox - My Story

I have struggled all my time with being big or heavy. In my early life I was most of the time the "chubby" girl at the corner in my group of friends. I fought with my weight years after years and it seemed that I could not shed my "extra pounds" regardless of what I did.

Last year near New Years Eve, I made a New Year's resolution (don't laugh at me, you know what that means sometimes) to try to get rid of some pounds one more time. This time I am using a lady doctor's book with meaningful tips to get lighter and healthier, which was recommended by a neighbor who dropped by my home and told me how this book changed her life.

I found the book is really helpful in guiding you through the weight loss process.

While most of us keep our outside clean, we tend not to pay much attention on the inside. Apple Cider Vinegar Weight Loss

Apple cider vinegar has been recommended for improved health for thousands of years. Sometimes traditional health remedies have some basis in fact, even if the facts aren't understood. All kinds of claims are made for vinegar, often by people selling something! Is it possible that vinegar could in some way contribute to weight loss? And how could this be?

What is apple cider vinegar?

Allow apple juice to ferment and you get an alcoholic "hard" cider. This can be accomplished in less than a week simply by leaving fresh apple juice on your kitchen counter to spontaneously ferment. Leave the fermented apple cider on the counter for about two more weeks and just as easily you get apple cider vinegar.

A certain genus of bacteria and certain strains of yeast in some way locate the vinegar and consume the alcohol in the hard cider and transform the alcohol to acetic acid. So just exposure to the air turns fresh squeezed apple juice into vinegar in just a few weeks.

Apple cider vinegar weight loss?

The idea that vinegar can help with weight loss is not new. You can read testimonials in many places about how vinegar has helped someone lose weight. Often the suggestion is to take a spoon full of vinegar or two before each meal. Of course if you don't like the taste of the vinegar, you can probably find a source of pills containing apple cider vinegar! That's the idea, just take a little vinegar before each meal and lose weight.

In this case there is a recent Arizona State University study that suggests that vinegar can help with weight loss and suggests why. Only part of the study involved vinegar. The vinegar was consumed as a diluted drink before meals and did alter the glycemic effect of meals. The glycemic effect relates to how fast insulin rises in response to sugars entering the blood stream. Eat low glycemic foods ( whole grains, non-starchy vegetables, legumes) and you get a feeling of fullness and will take in less energy during a day. Eat high glycemic index foods (processed grains, potato products, white flour and sweets) and excess carbohydrates you eat will be mostly stored as fat. In this study, apple cider vinegar reduced the glycemic effect of certain meals. The effect though was quite small.

So it does seem that apple cider vinegar can help you feel full after a meal and can alter the digestion of what you eat to help with weight loss. But don't expect huge results. The results are small.

Long term weight loss.

Altering your diet and exercising are the way to real weight loss. If you really want to lose pounds and feel better, change your lifestyle to eat more healthy foods and get regular exercise. But there are many small steps you can take on the way to a more healthy way of living. Using apple cider vinegar does appear to help with weight loss, but it's only a small effect.

Improve Your Motivation to Lose Weight

Most people will know that there are too many weight loss products that fail to give you what they say they will. After so many attempts the motivation to lose weight begins to disappear.

However not all weight loss methods are useless and they practice healthy ways towards weight loss. So why is it that so few people manage to acquire the goal of weight loss?

One of the major issues that can make the difference between who succeeds and who fails is the ability keep your willpower strong.

All diets and weight loss products are useless if you don't have the willpower to see them through. In all honesty most people who want to succeed end up losing the motivation before losing the weight.

The Motivation to lose weight seems to be strong in the beginning; however it does not take long for this to disappear. This is a common situation but can be avoided if done properly. It is just as important to work on the mind as it is to work on the body.

As soon as you start to get the feelings that you are starting to find things difficult, stop worrying about it. Accept that you are getting these feelings and that they are completely normal. Once you can learn to accept something you no longer have to fight against it.

I am not talking about giving up I am talking about knowing that you have these feelings in your head and there is nothing wrong with them. Go back to the feelings that you had at the start. Why you wanted to lose weight and how motivated you first felt. Write down all the reasons you had for wanting weight loss.

Was it so that you look and feel more attractive? Was it because you wanted to become healthier? Was it because you wanted more energy?

Whatever the reasons were write them all down and focus on those reasons. The motivation to lose weight can become stronger with practice. The more you think about motivation, and the less you think about how hard it is, the better off you will be.

The truth is that the more you think about something the bigger it gets. Have you ever had a problem where you find that the more you dwell on this problem the bigger and more stressful it seems to get?

What many people don't realise is that this works both ways, focusing on good things on a regular basis will also result on those good things the better you will feel, motivation can be improved in this way too.

Start to think about what results you are going to get, how you are going to look, how others will see you, how you are going to feel; try to see these thoughts as pictures in your mind. This is called visualization and can be a very valuable tool.

Stay positive, stay determined, stay strong, stick with your goals, visualize, think of these things everyday and your motivation to lose weight will go from strength to strength.

Memory Loss Linked to Overweight

How could excess weight cause memory loss? Full fat cells produce proteins called cytokines that turn on your immunity to cause inflammation that damages tissue throughout your body, including your brain. Researchers at Toulouse University Hospital in France tested people first in 1996 and again five years later. During that period, overweight people lost far more of their ability to recall words than their thinner counterparts. (Neurology, October 2006).

Your immunity is supposed to protect you from infections. When a germ gets into your body, your immunity produces white blood cells and proteins called antibodies that attach to and kill germs. As soon as the germ is gone, your immunity is supposed to stop making antibodies and white blood cells. In some people the immunity remains active and attacks a persons own body to cause heart attacks, strokes, certain cancers, and even diabetes. This recent study shows that it may even attack your nerves and brain. Being overweight can cost you IQ points, and the most effective way to prevent obesity is to exercise regularly.

How much do you need to exercise to lose weight? In one recent study, researchers asked people to walk and count an extra 2000 steps each day (Journal of Human Nutrition & Dietetics, August 2006). This is really a minimal amount of exercise. They also kept complete food diaries. They lost weight and did not increase their food intake. When you start an exercise program, your appetite may increase, but this will not increase your caloric intake to equal the extra calories that you burn. For example, if you burn 600 calories with added exercise, you may take in 200 calories extra and you will lose weight.

Exercise helps you lose weight by raising your metabolism so you burn more calories for several hours after you finish exercising. However, only vigorous exercise that increases body temperature and makes you sweat will increase your metabolism enough to continue burning more calories after you finish. Overweight is a major cause of premature death and increases risk for heart attacks, strokes, cancers and arthritis. If you are out of shape and want to lose weight, get a stress cardiogram and ask your doctor to clear you for an exercise program. Start slowly and then gradually increase the intensity of your exercise over several months.
